CHICAGO IS TAKING SPARTAK'S FORWARD YAKUBOV

23 year old Mikhail Yakubov, who centered Spartak's top line this season for 29 games and earning 12 (5+7) points, is returning to the NHL. The North American club Chicago Blackhaws, which drafted the player in 2000 under the very high 10th overall draft spot, offered Yakubov a new contract that satisfied him. In the next few days he will be leaving for the United States to sign the new deal. In accordance to the NHL rules, Chicago placed the young player on waivers yesterday. If not a single club acquires him, he will continue his career with Chicago.

"We are very disappointed to lose Mikhail. During the first half of the season he became the team's leader, and around him we built our top offensive line. But in the current situation we do not have any right to hold on to him", - said Spartak's head coach Valeri Bragin to SE correspondent Pavel Savchik.

MIKHAIL YAKUBOV: IN SPARTAK I WASN'T EARNING LESS

Prior to his flight to North America, Mikhail Yakubov answered SE correspondent Pavel Savchik's questions.

Why now has Chicago offered you a new contact?
M. Yakubov
: Maybe the club's management wanted to retain me in their system, and for that it was important to sign a contract with me prior to December 1st. A week ago I got an offer from my agent and in the end made the decision to accept its terms.

Did someone from Chicago follow your progress, or were they simply afraid that they would lose a talented player out of the system that any NHL club could take during the waiver draft without any compensation?
M. Yakubov
: I doubt that anyone was here in Russia to specifically take a look at my play. In any case, I am not aware of anything like that. Did another club want to acquire me? I don't believe that much. Simply, the rule right now is such: a player signed during the season must go through the waivers. This happened with me. Besides that, Chicago suffered injuries to two leading forwards, so they need immediate replacements.

How does the new contract differ from the previous offer?
M. Yakubov
: I wouldn't say that the new deal is better financially. Believe me, I am not making less with Spartak. Simply now Chicago needs me more, and the NHL has changed and my style of play fits well into the new rules. This is what tilted the weight towards Chicago.

Did you sign a one way deal, and are you guarantied a spot in the NHL club's lineup.
M. Yakubov
: No, my contract is two way, and I don't have any guaranties to be in the main lineup. Everything will depend on my own performance. But there is a clause in the contract that in the case when I am sent to the farm club and I get "stuck" there, I may return back to Spartak.

Did the deal you signed with Spartak account for a possible departure to the NHL.
M. Yakubov
: No, there was no such a clause. Truthfully, I acknowledge that I did not realize that Chicago would remember about me and extend my contract. This summer we parted ways not on a very good note.

Do you regret that you will have to leave the club that you became a leader of half way though the season?
M. Yakubov
: Of course, it's not pleasant, but that's how it turned out. First of all, I let down the coaching staff who depended on me and trusted me, gave me plenty of ice time. But Bragin and his assistants Tyurikov and Boldin understood me very well: if I have a chance to play in the NHL, then I need to use it. I am thankful to them for helping me resolve the situation. I promise that if things don't work out for me in the NHL, then I will return to Spartak.

How will you remember the Spartak portion of your career.
M. Yakubov
: I am very happy with my time on this team. I will only remember good things regarding Spartak. Such a regard for me will never be forgotten. With such regard, you feel a lot more relaxed and untied on the ice. For any player it is important when they are trusted. I want to thank my linemates Alex Yunko and David Ling. We constantly supported and helped each other. I think our line looked good together. Thanks to all my teammates, and also to our loyal fans, who did not turn away from the team in the games where we did not play well.

How was the news of your departure to the NHL met in the club?
M. Yakubov
: I didn't tell anyone for a long time regarding my departure for America. I told the guys only on Wednesday at the practice. The guys accepted the news well, joking that I should be ashamed of myself for leaving the team to it's own devices. Then of course wished me good luck.

Will you be able to help Spartak in the next games against Salavat Yulaev and Lada?
M. Yakubov
: No. From 5pm on December 1st, I will no longer have the right to skate for any other club than Chicago.
