The 29-year-old forward Alexei Morozov, champion of the Russian Superleague 2005-06 with Ak Bars Kazan' and the winner of seven individual 2006 RSL awards, has signed a new three-year contract with Ak Bars. Strangely enough, Morozov's North American agent is not aware yet of this contract.
Why has the product of the "Krilya Sovetov" developmental system choosen to remain in his homeland? Why did he pick the Superleague over the best as well as best paying league in the world - the NHL? Alexei Morozov provides the answers to SovietSport correspondent:
Alexei, everyone is wondering what kind of contract you signed with Ak Bars: a full one or one with a clause that will allow you to leave for the NHL?
- A full one. I have decided to remain with Ak Bars. This decision is final. I am perfectly happy with everything in Russia. From good a greater good one should not seek. I did not wait for the 1st of July - the day when Pittsburgh relinquishes my rights and I become a free agent. I no longer saw the point of waiting, and furthermore the management of Ak Bars was very insistent on their will to keep me with the club. I am perfectly happy with my new three-year agreement.
So come the 1st of July you will not be engaging in any negotiations with NHL teams?
-The likelihood of me playing in the NHL is nonexistent.
But you wanted to return to the NHL and play in the best league in the world...
- Yes. Indeed, up until a certain moment I badly wanted to return to the NHL. But recently, I realized that I didn't want to move anywhere. I don't want to suffer from nostalgia (laughing)! And Kazan', to be honest, is where my soul lies. Here I have an excellent coach and great teammates. The management of Ak Bars - true professionals. During my whole tenure at Ak Bars, I was not faced with a single problem. There lies the answer to your question.
When will you being preparing for the season?
- The young guys will meet up in Kazan' on June 27th, with everyone else joining them a little later. I will join them July 5th. The management gave me an extra week off to rest. Right now I am on my way to the airport. My wife and I are flying to the United Arab Emirates. The season was victorious, but extremely difficult and intense. I need to recover emotionally.
SovietSport has learned that Morozov's contract with Ak Bars does not contain an out clause for the forward to leave for the NHL if he should receives a tantalizing offer. At the same time, Morozov's North American agent Ilya Moliver* told SovietSport that he is unaware that his client has signed a contract with Ak Bars.
