Alexei Kaigorodov (Metallurg Magnitigorsk)
By Vladimir Semenov of Gazeta.ru
(January 7th, 2007)
Translated by Yura Zyuzin of Russian Hockey Digest
The Ottawa Senators have recently traded the rights to Alexei Kaigorodov to Phoenix in exchange for center Mike Comrie. The 23-year-old Kaigorodov refused his assignment to the AHL this season and returned to Russia, but will try his NHL luck with the Coyotes come the 2007-2008 season.
Was the trade to Phoenix at the end of last year unexpected for you?
-I was not surprised. I knew that Ottawa wanted to trade me all the way back in October, when they decided I was not ready to play in the NHL. But no deals favorable to both sides could be found at the time. I returned to Russia and started playing for Magnitigorsk.
If the trade occurred at the end of October, then...
--I would have certainly gone to Phoenix. But what happened, happened...
In terms of style you are often compared to the exalted Igor Larionov. Everyone notes your excellent vision, your good shooting ability...
-Of course it's pleasant to be compared to a master like Larionov. But, I think I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, before I can receive such compliments.
What do you know about Phoenix?
-Probably the same things as you. The head coach in Arizona is Wayne Gretzky, probably the best Canadian center of all-time. And, I think, that after this season I will try to make the Phoenix Coyotes. It would be very interesting to work with a person as great as Gretzky.
For now you're playing for Metallurg Magnitigorsk...
-The beginning of the season did not go so well for the team, but as of late we have caught up to the leaders. This sounds quite banal, but the entire fight is still ahead of us. Magnitka has been a contender for medals the past few seasons, and I think we will compete for an award this season as well.
The last few years Magnitka has always been coached by foreign specialists in Marek Sikora and then Dave King. Now you have to work under the leadership of a Russian specialist in Fedor Kanarejkin.
-I have met Fedor Leonidovich prior to this year, and no problems arose with my adaptation in Metallurg. After all, I was not absent from Metallurg for a considerable amount of time. Only a couple of months. And I knew all the guys well.
Coming up are the World Championships in Moscow and Mytishchi. Will you have a chance to make the national team?
-Lets say that I am not too hopeful. I am aquatinted with Vyacheslav Arkad'evich Bykov, there was even a little communication between us at one time. So everything depends on myself. In my career I have already played in a World Championships, in 2003 in Finland. But you yourself understand that to play in the World Championships, moreover in Moscow, is a dream for every hockey player. Including Alexei Kaigorodov.
